This is 880 North just before I238 in 2004.
Otherwise this is known as the "nasty
Nimitz." It has been worked on almost non-stop since 1985, and it is a
lot wider than it used to be. And a lot smoother! In the mid 1980s it
was bumpy enough to pop out your fillings. In 2005 880 seems most of
the time about as busy as 405 on a Sunday morning. I was out here
driving in May 2017. I was in the worst traffic I had been in anywhere
in the US. And I am including LA county. I was out here the most from
2002 to 2008. I was never on the original Cypress section. I was on
highway 17 very often from about 1985 to 1990. After that I hardly ever
was on it.
880 used to be about four lanes most of
the way from 101 to Mission! Yikes! The interchange with Mission
Boulevard is being reworked and that section is being widened in 2006.
A good chunk of 880 collapsed in Oakland 1989, and was not replaced
until about 1998.
